STARMEDIA,

New York, USA

Conversion of an industrial printing building in TriBeCa, New York into HQ offices for Multi-Media Company, completed in 2002. (21,000 sqm, 15,000,000 USD)

The explosion of highly successful ‘.com’ businesses in the second half of the 90’s brought an entire new work culture to Manhattan’s Silicon Alley. The staff was very young, the atmosphere needed to be playful, many companies were competing for the same already well paid staff.

The design was able to distinguish the company from their competitors and to attract staff by creating a high variety of workspaces, by providing different types of amenities, by its use of a industrial materials and finishes.

The design was highly adaptable as the company’s requirements changed far faster than actual construction could follow. The design was mostly open plan with exposed cabling and services.

Participation by AaLl Director was as Senior Designer for Hillier,  responsible for the design and follow through supervision of the execution, search and evaluation of suitable properties, concept design through construction administration to accommodate rapidly growing ‘.com’ company (from less than 50 staff to projected 400 within the design period).
