The nuts and bolts of the design team’s output remains the Design Development (DD) documentation. A well run and collaborative design team and quality DD documents will turn inspirational design ideas into great buildings.

We will either lead or support the team during the design development of the project:

  • Develop the Project Execution Plan to establish or confirm the brief, cost plan, responsibilities, quality control and risk strategies.

  • Monitor and review design progress for adherence to the original concept design and design requirements.

  • Coordinate between all design team members, lead design workshops.

  • Monitor and review progress and performance of the design team, update risk assessments.

  • Assist with technical support: construction methods, services integration, architectural detailing.

Design Development

KACST, Riyadh, KSA

Overall Science and Technology Research Campus design, including Detail Design and Tender for 6 different Laboratory Buildings, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. (Buildings 110,000 sqm, 400 Million USD). Projected completion 2020.

The campus is designed so the common practice in Saudi to have large surface parking in front of buildings is replaced by a route from parking structures to a public boulevard and only than into the building. Together with the programming of public functions along the boulevards, a more social campus with public spaces and opportunities for human interactions is created.

The laboratory buildings’ functions vary significantly from Petrochemical research to Nanotechnology, from Satellite Technology to Nuclear Sciences, and for some buildings the brief is still unknown. Together with Fraunhofer IAO, modular laboratory buildings were designed that can accommodate a wide variety of functions within a modular architectural system.

The building’s facade needs to address both the high air temperature as well as reduce direct sun exposure. A fairly standard facade build-up was chosen with sufficient mass to address ambient temperature. The ACP cladding panels fold out and form protective hoods so sun exposure of the glazing is minimised. The hoods are designed parametrically which allows best performance with the form customised for each individual window. Despite the complex geometry, 90% of the facade is detailed with standard off the shelf construction methods.

AaLl acted as consulting Project Managers and Project Architects for LAVANATION, responsible for the Design Development and Tender Documentation of the Research Campus, build and contract the team of consultants, run workshops with client, make client presentations, manage and coordinate team of specialist consultants, lead and closely work together with the architectural design team in the detail development of the project.
